MAJOR UPDATES TO AUSTRALIAN IMMIGRATION POLICIES STARTING JULY 1ST, 2024

The Australian Immigration Department has revised its immigration policies, with significant changes set to take effect from July 1st, 2024. These updates impact various visa categories and applicant criteria. Here are the key takeaways:

#1 – Increase in Student Visa Application Fees

The application fee for student visas (subclass 500) has been increased to AUD 1600. This change will affect all new student visa applicants.

#2 – Age Limit Reduction for Temporary Graduate 485 Visa

The age limit for applicants of the Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) has been reduced to 35 years. However, for Masters of Research and PhD graduates, the age limit will remain at 50 years or under. This adjustment aims to streamline the visa process and focus on younger graduates.

#3 – Restrictions on Onshore Visa Lodgement

Holders of the Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) and Tourist Visa (subclass 600) will no longer be able to lodge a student visa (subclass 500) while onshore in Australia. This policy aims to prevent “visa hopping” and ensure that visa holders maintain compliance with their initial visa conditions.

#4 – Increased Salary Threshold for Employer Sponsored Visas

The Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) for Employer Sponsored Visas has been increased to AUD 73,150. This change impacts visa subclasses 482 and 494 and is designed to ensure that sponsored employees receive a fair and competitive salary.

#5 – Extended Job Search Period for Employer Sponsored Visas

Employer Sponsored Visa holders (subclasses 482 and 494) will now have 180 days to find a new employer if they lose their job. Additionally, they will be allowed to work for another employer while they search for a new sponsor. This policy provides more flexibility and security for skilled workers in Australia.

These changes highlight the importance of staying informed and compliant with Australian immigration policies.
