Australia remains one of the most popular study destinations for international students. However, with evolving global migration trends, the Australian Government has introduced a new requirement to strengthen the integrity of its student visa system. Replacing the previous Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement, the Genuine Student (GS) criterion is now in effect for all student visa applications lodged on or after 23 March 2024.
What is the Genuine Student (GS) Requirement?
The Genuine Student requirement aims to ensure that students entering Australia do so with the primary intention of studying. However, it also acknowledges that some students may eventually seek pathways to permanent residence if they develop skills that Australia values post-study.
This policy ensures that the applicant’s intention aligns with the core purpose of the student visa — to study, grow academically, and contribute positively either to their home country or, where applicable, to Australia’s workforce.
What Are Students Required to Submit Under GS?
Applicants must respond to a set of specific questions in English (each limited to 150 words) as part of their online visa application form. These include:
- Current circumstances (family ties, employment, financial situation)
- Reasons for choosing the course and institution in Australia
- Understanding of the course and living conditions in Australia
- Expected benefits of completing the course
- Any additional relevant information
If the applicant is applying onshore from a non-student visa or previously held a student visa, they will be asked an additional question.
All statements must be supported by credible documentary evidence, not just generic claims. Applicants must upload these documents to their ImmiAccount
Supporting Documents to Strengthen Your Application
To prove you’re a genuine student, include documentation related to:
Previous Academic History
- Transcripts and certificates
- Duration and level of previous studies
- Study records in Australia, if any (including course changes, academic progress, and study gaps)
Current Employment
- Employer details and duration of employment
- Position held and job responsibilities
- A reference contact for employment verification
Circumstances in Home Country
- Ties to family, community, or job
- Reason for choosing Australia over home-country education options
- Military obligations or political instability (if applicable)
Economic Standing
- Income proofs (ITR, salary slips, bank statements)
- Evidence of business activity or job offers post-study
How Is the GS Assessment Made?
The Department of Home Affairs will assess:
- Personal circumstances – family, economic, and community ties
- Intent to study – course relevance, academic background, and employment goals
- Knowledge about Australia – course research, provider details, lifestyle understanding
- Migration history – previous visas, travel behavior, compliance, refusals (if any)
- Post-study value – employment prospects and expected salary with new qualification
