From 7 August 2025: Expanded English Test Options Announced

On 7 August 2025, the Australian Department of Home Affairs announced a major change to the accepted English Language Tests (ELT) for visa purposes. These updates affect a wide range of visa categories, including Skilled Migration, Student Visas, Temporary Work Visas, and others.

The good news? Applicants now have more flexibility than ever before.

Key Highlights of the Update

  • Nine English language tests are now accepted — up from only five previously.
  • This expansion means you have more choice and a better chance to select the test that best suits your strengths.
  • For tests taken on or before 6 August 2025, the previous rules and score requirements will remain valid for certain timeframes, depending on your visa eligibility.
  • Updated score thresholds and validity periods apply to all new test results taken after 7 August 2025.

What This Means for You

  • More options mean less pressure — you can choose the English test where you perform best.
  • If you’ve already taken an accepted test before 6 August 2025, you may still be eligible under the old rules for a limited period.
  • Retaking your test under the new system could improve your eligibility and boost your overall migration points.
  • Early review of your case will help you avoid any last-minute surprises that could delay your application.

At Siva Visa, as MARN-registered migration agents, we are already:

  • Reviewing our clients’ existing test results under both old and new rules
  • Helping you choose the most suitable test for your visa type and migration goals
